The Oval Diamond Cut

The oval diamond cut is a unique variation on the round brilliant cut. Oval cut diamonds characteristically have 56 + facets and the ideal oval diamond is perfectly symmetrical with  a length-to-width ratio of 1.5. There is sometimes a small variation in the symmetry depending on the natural stone. The oval is an exceptionally good cut for engagement rings because it is extremely stable. With no protruding points the oval is a great shape for withstanding the everyday wear that an engagement ring must endure. The shape is also advantageous because the stone can easily be secured with 4 prongs and it is not susceptible to snagging or catching on clothing.

Oval diamonds also have the advantage of appearing slightly larger than their round brilliant cousins for the same carat size. However, the oval diamond is somewhat less forgiving when it comes to the clarity, cut and color of the diamond. This is one of the shapes where it is essential to stick with high quality stones like those used by Jeffrey Daniels and Gem Platinum. When high quality oval diamonds are used the results are amazing. However, lower quality diamonds or poorly cut oval diamonds are easier to spot than in almost any other shape. When a low quality cut is used in an oval diamond a bowtie shadow may be visible in the stone. Similarly, flaws that might not be noticeable in a round cut are much harder to hide in an oval cut diamond. It’s best to stick to oval diamonds with a G color or better on the GIA scale and with clarity of VS1 or higher on GIA or above 3 on the AGS scale.

At Sotheby’s Geneva May Sale this year, 70% of the lots sold above their hammer estimated prices. There were several stars of the show including a Fancy “Unique Pink” pear shaped diamond that was the largest vivid pink diamond to ever come to auction. This stunning stone weighed in at 15.38 carats, and the sale price of $31.6 million averaging $2,052,094 per carat. Other notable Fancy Diamonds sold this year included the Reza Jewel, a 6.64-carat marquis-shaped Fancy Blue Diamond mounted in a brooch, fetching $13.7 Million, and another Fancy Pink Pendant weighing 18.51 carats that sold for $9.8 Million.

THE BLUE

The Blue is a Fancy Vivid Blue pear-shaped diamond, weighing approximately 13.22 carats, flanked on either side by a pear-shaped diamond. Itold for $24,202,829 in 2014 at Christie’s in Geneva.

THE PERFECT PINK

The Perfect Pink is a superb coloured diamond and diamond ring set with a rectangular-shaped fancy intense pink diamond weighing 14.23 carats, flanked on either side by a rectangular-shaped diamond and mounted in 18k rose and white gold. The Perfect Pink sold for $23,274,064 in 2010 at Christie’s in Hong Kong.

THE ORANGE

The Orange is the largest Fancy Vivid Orange diamond in the world. The Fancy Vivid Orange pear-shaped diamond weighing approximately 14.82 carats sold for $35,543,804 in 2013 at Christie’s in Geneva.

The Flawless, a spectacular and highly important diamond, is a pear-shaped diamond weighing approximately 101.73 carats. It sold for $26,746,541 in 2013 at Christie’s in Geneva.

A PINK MASTERPIECE

A Pink Masterpiece is set to be sold in Geneva on November 10th. This cushion-shaped Fancy Vivid Pink diamond is the largest of its kind ever to come to auction, weighing in at 16.08 carats. With an estimated value of $23-28 million, the stone is set in a ring, and is surrounded by a double row of pavé white diamonds, a third row of small pink diamonds nestled underneath.

Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo shared how they pick the jewelry you see on the show (the actors have the final say!) and what inspires their love of platinum and diamonds (it's far deeper than their beauty).

It’s like scenes when Olivia is in the background at a client meeting yet you know she is handling everything even from a distance. Her jewelry should feel the same. We use a lot of platinum as opposed to bright gold. Platinum has a sublime presence.

 Matt's love story submission won the judges' hearts:

"I met her when we were 18 in college. She still had her braces, and I still had my baby fat. I knew that we were meant to be together. It didn't really make sense, and I didn't really know how I knew this, but it was a feeling. She wanted to be together, but I knew that I was too immature at the time. If we began dating, we would eventually break up ending the future I had envisioned. We waited patiently throughout the years, we graduated, and began our careers. At 24, at my best friend's wedding, I looked at her and realized I was ready. The stars aligned, the fog was lifted, and I realized we were finally ready. Soon after that we began dating. 2 years later, and we are still going strong, ready to start our lives together. She is the best woman I have ever met (she even waited for me to grow up!). It is time to start the engagement that seems to have been destined for us, and move onto the marriage that I envisioned all those years ago. I love her and she deserves everything."

Upon winning, Matt was able to choose one each of three rings, three proposal locations, and three charities (to which Jewelers Mutual provides a $1,000 donation). In true New York fashion, Matt proposed to Linda at the Empire State building with a Gem Platinum engagement ring in hand. With a cellist and the Matt and Linda's parents nearby, it was a perfect affair.

• Continued interest in precious color stones as a valid  alternative to diamonds. 

• Natural color diamonds in bridal, as well as fashion  jewelry, particularly for the most affl uent customers,  who continue to be drawn to anything that leans  toward the rare or exclusive.
